I was listening to CityAlight’s “Yet Not I But Through Christ in Me”, and the first verse struck me anew:
“What gift of grace is Jesus my redeemer
There is no more for heaven now to give
He is my joy, my righteousness, and freedom
My steadfast love, my deep and boundless peace
There is no more for heaven now to give.”
How many times have I sung these words without being hit by their magnitude? I played back the song for a second time because I needed to hear the words again. I needed to meditate on them as they stirred my soul and filled my heart with hope.
There is NOTHNG more I need than Jesus. I know this. I believe this. I share this. I cling to this. But I was reminded anew that He is enough and He is everything. There is no more for heaven to give. There is no further work that God needs to complete to seal our salvation. When Jesus cried, “It is finished”, it truly was done. His sacrifice satisfied God’s righteous requirements. The ransom was paid in full.
But He wasn’t just enough for our salvation. Through the Holy Spirit, He is enough for our day-to-day living. He is our Example, our Confidence and our Help. “Therefore, since we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens – Jesus the Son of God – let us hold fast to our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in every way as we are, yet without sin. Therefore, let us approach the Throne of Grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in time of need.” Hebrews 4:14-16
So, here is the question for us: Why are we longing for more? Why do we keep looking for special messages from the Lord “just to us”? Why do we want Him to talk to us in a personal way outside of the pages of Scripture? Why is the “word more sure” not enough for our hearts? Peter talks about this in 2 Peter 1. Even after hearing God’s very voice from heaven extolling Jesus with the words, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased”, Peter still reminds his readers what they can cling to:
“And we have something more sure, the prophetic word, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.” 2 Peter 1:19
God created the world with spoken words (Genesis 1:3), God sent His Son as the Living Word (John 1:1-3) and God has chosen to communicate with the world and His kids through the written Word (2 Timothy 3:16-17). There is no more for heaven to give! He has given us all we need for life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3).
May we be those who love the Word of God and read, study and meditate on those words of life till they fill us up and overflow in the sweetness that comes as we walk by the Spirit. May we not search for more because Jesus is enough. And may our hearts be filled with hope that the Bible that sits on our laps or occupies a corner on our desk is all that we need to walk in a manner pleasing to the Lord and all that we need to live in sweet fellowship and communion with Him!
There is no more for heaven now to give!
Such sweet peace when we look to Him with the knowledge that He is enough! May we do so continually.
